Antique bookcases always served a specific purpose - storage - as book shelves or as kitchen cabinets. Open shelves were originally intended for the work room or office, master room or kitchen. The living or dining rooms had shelves designated for books - i.e. with glass doors. Only at the end of the 1800's did open shelves appear in living rooms.
